TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:
WHEREAS the Ford government promised to expand provincial parks in the last election; and
WHEREAS Bill 68 removes the majority of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park’s beachfront lands from the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, 2006, stripping them of long-standing environmental protections; and
WHEREAS removing these lands from the Act clears a path for their sale, lease, or private redevelopment; and
WHEREAS the Ford government is continuing to weaken protections for other provincial parklands and public spaces; and
WHEREAS this government has a track record of selling and leasing public land to insiders and friends of the Premier, including: Ontario Place, the Greenbelt, the Foundry, and the Hearn gas plant.
THEREFORE we, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to:
Immediately halt all plans enabled by Bill 68 to sell, lease, or otherwise dispose of any lands formerly within Wasaga Beach Provincial Park; restore full provincial park protections by returning these lands to the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, 2006; and recognize its responsibility to safeguard Ontario’s provincial parklands in trust for future generations.
